Science

This term in science, we’ve been learning all about our five senses, and this week our focus was on hearing. The children have really enjoyed diving into this topic, and we wanted to share some of the exciting activities we’ve been doing in class.

To start the week, we went on a “sound hunt” around the school. Armed with our listening ears, we explored different areas and paid close attention to the sounds we could hear. From the ticking of a classroom clock to the chatter in the lunch hall, we discussed whether the sounds were loud or quiet and began to compare them. The children were fantastic at identifying everyday noises and thinking about where they were coming from and why some were louder than others.

Back in the classroom, we took a closer look at how we hear. Using a model of the inside of the ear, we explored the different parts — including the ear canal, eardrum, and tiny bones that help pass sound along to the brain. It was fascinating to see how each part plays a role in helping us to hear the world around us!

We’ve had some great conversations and questions this week, and the children have shown lots of curiosity and enthusiasm. Why not ask your child what their favourite sound from our hunt was, or if they can explain how sound travels through the ear?

Writing

Our classroom has been brimming with imagination this week as we continue working on our “finding tale” in English. The children are doing a fantastic job creating and writing their very own stories, all centred around a pirate who loses something precious.

We’ve been learning about the key features of a finding tale — where a character loses something important and goes on an exciting journey to find it again. With treasure maps, stormy seas, and mysterious islands, our young authors have been bringing their ideas to life through rich vocabulary and descriptive language.

Together, we’ve been planning our stories carefully, thinking about:

  • What the pirate has lost — from magical compasses to long-lost treasure!

  • Where the pirate goes on their quest

  • What challenges or surprises they face along the way

  • And of course, how the story ends — do they find what they’re looking for?

It’s been a joy to see the children so engaged and proud of their work. They’re building confidence in structuring their writing and using imaginative detail to keep their readers hooked.

We can’t wait to share some of our finished tales with you soon — you might even spot a sea monster or two!
